Not Another Gay Movie

I finally saw the much publicized movie, "Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros". I know it's long overdue. The film was released July 13, 2005 through CINEMALAYA.

At first I thought it was just another gay movie.Exploiting the taboo-ness of being gay in the Philippines. I found it bold for a film outfit to make a movie centering on a 12 year old gay kid, and actually release it.I guess times are changing fast, which is definitely a good thing.

The movie was lead by a newcomer, Nathan Lopez who played Maximo Oliveros, nicknamed Maxie. Also starring are mix of newcomers and veteran actors like Soliman Cruz (known for his role in ABSCBN's Teleserye Maging Sino Ka Man as Mang Oca), the cutie Ping Medina, Bodgie Pascua (Yes, Kuya bojie of Batibot),Jr Valentin who played the handsome cop Victor.Pepe Smith also graced the screen playing piano and being ridiculed by children.I read that he also wrote music for the film. It was directed by Aureus Solito (Pisay and Tuli).

This film is refreshingly funny. Nathan did justice to the role. Kudos to the casting they did, it made a powerful ensemble. Script is witty, would make you laugh on the right moments and cry on the tearjerker scenes.
The cinematography is so-so could've been better. Of course, like most movies, it has its dragging scenes you'd prefer to be cut to the floor. But overall the film superseded that.

For someone who doesn't get to watch a lot of indie films, (due to a bunch of pathetic reasons), I'm very grateful for Starcinema for releasing this on mainstream media. A chance for them to make a quick buck and do Filipino movie goers some good by releasing a movie that is actually socially relevant.

For those who haven't seen this movie, go grab a copy (Im sure your suking manong in quiapo would be thrilled to see you) . It's definitely worth your while.
